Mossbacks Event Calendar

21 August 2017
Title Time Description
Alert - Stayton Solar Eclipse Walk 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM 5 km. (3.1 miles) or 10 km. (6.2 miles), both rated easy.

A walk has been scheduled in Stayton on the day of the total solar eclipse. Start times for the walk are 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., and the start point is at the Santiam Senior Center, 41818 Kingston-Jordan Road SE in Stayton. The senior center has 50 viewing glasses available, but it is advisable to take your own. Several stores have them for sale at a nominal price; also some convention and visitor bureaus. The walk will be on sidewalks and bridges, and will include the Jordan Covered Bridge.

Stayton will be at the center of the total eclipse path as it passes over Oregon. Darkening of the earth will begin shortly after 9 a.m., with total darkness at 10:17 a.m. lasting about 2 minutes. The earth will then begin lighting up again, with normal daylight reappearing shortly after 11 a.m. Many people (some estimate a million or more) will migrate to various places in Oregon to experience the total eclipse. Stayton may be a favored location because of its closeness to I-5.

Because of the vast crowds and expected clogged roads, the Mossbacks decided at their June club meeting to not attend the Stayton walk on August 21 as a club. Recognizing this concern of many people, the sponsoring Volkssports club, the Silverton Walk-Abouts, decided to offer a "check walk" of the Stayton routes on Thursday, August 10. This will be a group walk starting at 10 a.m. from the Santiam Senior Center, 41818 Kingston-Jordan Road SE in Stayton. Both the 5 km. route and the 10 km. route will be available on August 10.

Those people who decide to go to Stayton can get details of the eclipse walk, and driving directions to the senior center, by clicking on the "Other Oregon Events" bar at the top left of this page and scrolling down to 8/21. Alternately, they can receive the same information on this and thousands of other Volkswalks and Volksbikes throughout the United States by clicking on the "National Events" bar on this page, then "Events" and following the prompts. The National Events page also has links to Volkswalks in Canada and 40 other countries.
