5 km. (3.1 miles) or 10 km. (6.2 miles), both rated easy.
At this time, no description has been given for this walk other than the length and difficulty rating. But, in the past the walk has started on the east side of the Willamette River and crossed a bridge to the west side, then followed the river north to view the many small boats decorated with Christmas lights and elaborate displays. These boats "parade" up and down the river for almost two hours. The walk crosses another bridge back to the east side, and walkers can continue viewing the boat parade while returning to the start point. The multicolored lights reflecting off the water are a memorable sight.
The Mossbacks will not have a carpool to this walk, because many people prefer staying over in Portland rather than hoofing it back to Springfield late at night. We highly recommend the walk, however.
The walk starts at the Rogue Eastside Pub, 928 SE 9th Avenue in Portland, between 4 and 7 p.m. We recommend starting close to 7 p.m., as the ships don't usually start parading until it is very dark.
Directions to the Eastside Pub, along with further details of this walk, can be found by clicking on the "Other Oregon Events" bar at the top left of this page and scrolling down to 12/15. Alternately, the same information on this and thousands of other Volkswalks and Volksbikes throughout the United States can be obtained by clicking on the "National Events" bar on this page, then "Events" and following the prompts. The National Events page also has links to Volkswalks in Canada and 39 other countries (click on "About Us" and "IVV Website").
