Today's walk uses sidewalks and streets, dirt and gravel paths to explore Salem's first historic district, called the Gaiety Hill - Bush's Pasture Park Historic District. The district's heyday was 1878 to 1938, and it features prominent and attractive residences and lovely gardens. Salem is also having their 70th annual Art Fair and Festival today in Bush's Pasture Park. This is a large art show with $5 admission charge; all but service dogs are prohibited.
Carpools will leave the Willamalane Adult Activity Center, 215 West C Street in Springfield, at 8 a.m. and return there about 3 p.m. Each rider pays the driver $5 to help cover car expenses. Following the walk, the carpoolers will probably choose a Salem restaurant to have lunch together; however, lunch arrangements are always optional for each rider/walker.
People traveling to Salem on their own should plan to meet the carpoolers at about 9:30 a.m. at the start point, the Salem Health Rehabilitation Center, Building M, 755 Mission Street in Salem. Or, they may choose to do the walk on their own, starting from the rehab center anytime between 9 a.m. and noon.
Directions to the rehab center, and further details of this walk, can be found by clicking on the "Other Oregon Events" bar at the top left of this page and scrolling down to 7/20. Alternately, the same information on this and thousands of other Volkswalks and Volksbikes throughout the United States can be obtained by clicking on the "National Events" bar on this page, then "Events" and following the prompts. The National Events page also has a link to Volkswalks in Canada and 39 other countries (click on "About Us" and "IVV Website").
