The Central Oregon Festival extends over four days. Each walk, bike, or swim can be done on any of the four days between dawn and dusk. Some involve driving several miles out of Bend, but with planning some of those that are away from Bend can be done enroute on your arrival or departure day. The instructions for each event are online at walk4fun.org, the website of the Columbia River Volkssport Club.
Registration for the events can be done online at walk4fun.org. Daily registration can also be done at the Festival headquarters, the Comfort Inn at 62065 SE 27th Street in Bend, Oregon.
An all-inclusive meet-and-greet will be held at the Comfort Inn on Friday evening. A banquet is also planned there for Saturday evening, but there are no places left for it.
Full details for the Festival, including registration, is found at walk4fun.org. or by Googling Columbia River Volkssport Club.
Central Oregon, especially in September, is a magical place: plan to be there!
5 km. (3.1 miles) or 10 km. (6.2 miles), both rated moderately easy.
Both walks go uphill to Mt. Angel Abbey, and include statues at the Stations of the Cross, a pioneer church, the abbey museum and cemetery, and splendid views of the Willamette Valley and Cascades foothills. The walk returns downtown, where the annual, popular Oktoberfest will be in full swing, with music and folk dance performances, beer and wine tents, and food and souvenir vendors. The 10 km. continues through residential areas.
Carpools leave the Willamalane Adult Activity Center, 215 West C Street in Springfield, at 8 a.m. and return there about 4 p.m. (the return depends upon time spent at the Oktoberfest). Each rider pays the driver $5 to help cover car expenses. The carpoolers will probably have their lunch from a food vendor or at one of the town's restaurants; lunch arrangements are always optional for each rider/walker.
People traveling to Mt. Angel on their own should plan to meet the carpoolers at about 10 a.m. at the start point, the Mt. Angel Towers residential community at 1 Tower Lane, Mt. Angel. They may also opt to do the walk on their own, starting from the Towers at their discretion.
Directions to Mt. Angel Towers, and further details of this walk, can be found by clicking on the "Other Oregon Events" bar at the top left of this page, then "Year Round Events" and scrolling down to "Mt.
