Most of this walk is in Washington. After a short walk on sidewalks and roads in Westport, Oregon, the Westport Ferry transports us partway across the Columbia River to Puget Island, Washington. This is a very flat island with much agriculture, as well as nice views of the Columbia. The rural setting surrounded by the wide river is very serene. The ferry ride costs $1 for each direction; the schedule is: quarter to the hour going to the island, on the hour coming from the island.
Carpools leave the Willamalane Adult Activity Center, 215 West C Street in Springfield, at 7 a.m. and return there between 5 and 6 p.m. Each rider pays the driver $10 to help cover car expenses. Following the walk, the carpoolers will probably choose a restaurant along the way to have lunch together; however, lunch arrangements are always optional for each rider/walker.
People traveling to Westport on their own may join the carpoolers at about 10 a.m. at the start point, the USW Local 1097 Union Hall at 91237 Old Mill Town Road, Westport. Or, they may walk on their own, starting from the Union Hall anytime between 8:30 a.m. and noon.
Directions to the Union Hall, and further details of this walk, can be found by clicking on the "Other Oregon Events" bar at the top left of this page and scrolling down to 8/19.
