Winchester Bay Year Round Walk
10 km. (6.2 miles), rated moderately easy.
A Mossbacks favorite, this year round walk starts out at a small fishing village with a marina, then follows along the Umpqua River as it nears the ocean. Going up a short, somewhat steep hill, it arrives at the U. S. Naval Station and a view platform to look out over the dunes at the river mouth and the Pacific Ocean. Then, the route leads down a short hill to the fresh water Lake Marie within the Umpqua River Lighthouse State Park. After circling the lake along a heavily-forested trail, the walk continues back up to the Naval Station and the lighthouse, the whale-watching platform, and a unique gift shop in the basement of the lighthouse. The route then returns along the Umpqua River to the fishing village. The fresh ocean air on this walk is delightful.
Carpools leave the Willamalane Adult Activity enter, 215 West C Street in Springfield, at 8 a.m. and return there at about 5 p.m. Each rider pays the driver $10 to help cover car expenses. Following the walk, the carpoolers will probably choose a restaurant at the Winchester Bay marina to have lunch together; however, lunch arrangements are always optional for each rider/walker.
People traveling to Winchester Bay on their own should plan to meet the carpoolers at about 10 a.m. at the start point, the Winchester Bay Market, 245 8th Street in Winchester Bay (close to Hwy. 101). Explicit directions to the market, along with further details of this walk, can be found by clicking on the "Other Oregon Events" bar at the top left of this page, then "Year Round Events" and scrolling down to "Winchester Bay - Douglas county - Umpqua River Lighthouse". Alternately, the same information on this and thousands of other Volkswalks and Volksbikes throughout the United States can be obtained by clicking on the "National Events" bar on this page, then "Events" and following the prompts. The National Events page also has links to Volkswalks in Canada and over 40 other countries.
