Hillsboro - Hosted Jackson Bottom Walk
10 km. (6.2 miles), rated easy.
This walk is through the 710 acre Jackson Bottom Wildlife Refuge at 2600 SW Hillsboro Highway, Hillsboro. This refuge provides habitat for over 200 species of birds, mammals and amphibians. Possible sightings are nesting great blue herons and bald eagles. An informative visitors center is worth a visit.
Carpools leave the Willamalane Adult Activity Center, 215 West C Street in Springfield, at 8 a.m. and return there about 5 p.m. Each rider pays the driver $10 to help cover car expenses. Following the walk, the group will probably choose a restaurant on the way home to have lunch together; however, lunch arrangements are always optional for each rider/walker.
People traveling to Hillsboro on their own should plan to join the carpoolers at about 10:30 a.m. at the Refuge entrance. Or, they may choose to do the walk on their own, starting at the refuge anytime between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
