Silver Falls State Park Year Round Walk
Officially, 11 km. (6.8 miles) or 12 km. (7.4 miles), both rated moderately easy.
However, shorter distances of 7 km. (4.3 miles) and 8 km. (5 miles) are available.
In your webpage editor's opinion, this is the #1 Volkswalk in Oregon; it has been rated in the top 10 in the United States. On the 11 km. route, 9 waterfalls are passed (going behind two of them). On the 12 km. option, a 10th (North Falls) is reached. The shorter distances miss a few waterfalls, but they are all spectacular. The trail drops from the Lodge area down and behind South Falls, then follows Silver Creek in a canyon on natural paths, then after the ninth waterfall climbs out of the canyon to wend its way back through a forest to the beginning. Because parts of the trail are often damp, and because there are some large steps to navigate up and down, good hiking/walking boots are recommended, as are walking sticks if accustomed to them. Be sure to carry adequate water.
Carpools leave the Willamalane Adult Activity Center, 215 West C Street in Springfield, at 8 a.m. and return there about 4:30 p.m. Each rider pays the driver $5 to help cover car expenses. Following the walk, the carpoolers will probably eat lunch (from the park concessionaire or from a sack lunch brought along) together in the large grassy South Falls Day Use Area.
People traveling to this walk on their own should plan to meet the carpoolers at about 9:30 a.m. at the registration point, the Safeway Grocery Store at 301 Westfield Street in Silverton. It is then a 14 mile drive to the park's South Falls Day Use Area. A $5 day use pass may be purchased when entering the Day Use Area (not needed if you have an annual Oregon State Parks Pass).
