5km. (3.1 miles) or 10 km. (6.2 miles), both rated easy.
This walk follows the Willamette River, exploring the site of Champoeg, where Oregon's first provisional government was formed. Shady natural trails and paved park paths lead along the river, through picturesque meadows, grassy picnic grounds, and the state campground. The visitor's center has interesting displays of early Oregon history in this area; in addition there is a pioneer mother's cabin in the park and historic Newell House Museum just outside the park. Admission to the park is free today, as it is Oregon State Parks Day.
Carpools leave the Willamalane Adult Activity Center, 215 West C Street in Springfield, at 8 a.m. and return there about 4 p.m. Each rider pays the driver $5 to help cover car expenses. Following the walk, the carpoolers will probably choose a restaurant in Salem or Albany to have lunch together; however, meal arrangements are always optional for each rider/walker (the picnic area in the park is very nice).
People traveling to Champoeg on their own may meet the carpoolers at about 9:30 a.m. at the start point (directions posted within the park). Or, they may choose to walk on their own, starting anytime between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The State Park address is 8229 Champoeg Road NE, St. Paul.
