5 km. (3.1 miles) rated easy, or 10 km. (6.2 miles) rated moderately easy.
This beautiful walk begins on a wide paved path on both sides of the Willamette River, then goes through the extensive Owen Rose Garden, past the historic Shelton-McMurphy House, and then up a steep path to the summit of Skinner Butte. The butte offers unobstructed views of Eugene, Springfield, the Cascade mountains and foothills. Leaving the butte, the trail leads to the Campbell Senior Center and back along the Willamette River to the Valley River Inn, passing a replica of Eugene Skinner's cabin and an innovative playground. The 5 km. route does not climb the butte.
Registration for the walk is at 8 a.m. in the lobby of the Valley River Inn, 1000 Valley River Way, Eugene. We should finish the walk before 11 a.m. Afterwards, some of the walkers may opt to have lunch together at one of the restaurants in the Valley River area; this is purely optional, of course.
Directions to the Valley River Inn, and further details of this walk, can be found by clicking on the "Other Oregon Events" bar at the top left of this page, then "Year Round Events" and scrolling down to "Eugene -Roses and History".
