Winchester Bay Year Round Walk
10 km. (6.2 miles), rated moderately easy.
As a group, we will venture to the coast for one of our most popular year-round walks. From the small fishing village of Winchester Bay, we walk along the Umpqua River to near its mouth, then journey up a short but moderately steep hill to the Umpqua River Lighthouse and Coast Guard Station. There is a whale-watching platform opposite the Station. Then, it's down a short hill to Lake Marie, within the Umpqua Lighthouse State Park. Circling around the lake, we return to the Coast Guard Station and the lighthouse. For many, a visit to the unique gift shop in the basement of the lighthouse is a must! Returning along the river, we visit the Winchester Bay marina.
For those wanting to carpool, we'll meet at 8 a.m. at the Willamalane Adult Activity Center, 215 West C Street in Springfield, and return there about 4:30 p.m. Each rider pays the driver $10 to help cover car expenses. Following the walk, the carpoolers will probably choose a restaurant in the marina to have lunch together; however; lunch arrangements are always optional for each rider/walker.
Those people going to Winchester Bay on their own should plan to meet the carpoolers at about 10 a.m. at the walk start point, the Winchester Bay Market at 8th Street and Highway 101 in Winchester Bay. Directions to the market, and further details on this walk, can be found by clicking on the "Other Oregon Events" bar at the top left of this page, then "Year Round Events" and scrolling down to "Winchester Bay - Umpqua Lighthouse Walk". Alternately, the same information on this and thousands of other Volkswalks and Volksbikes can be obtained by clicking on the "National Events" bar on this page, then "Events" and following the prompts.
