Keizer - Schreiner's Iris Garden walk
5 km. (3.1 miles) or 10 km. (6.2 miles), both rated easy.
For this one day a year, the iris fields at Schreiner's Iris Gardens, containing a multitude of iris varieties, are open for visitors. Schriener's are the largest iris growers in the United States, and also have a 10 acre display garden of many varieties of flowers, shrubs and trees. The 5 km. walk is in the fields and the display garden, while the 10 km. walk includes country roads and fields of newer iris varieties.
Carpools leave the Willamalane Adult Activity Center, 215 West C Street in Springfield, at 8 a.m. and return there about 3 p.m. Each rider pays the driver $5 to help cover car expenses. Following the walk the carpoolers will probably choose a restaurant in Salem or Albany to have lunch together; however, lunch arrangements are always optional for each rider/walker.
People traveling to the Iris Gardens on their own may meet the carpoolers at about 9:30 a.m. at the Gardens, 3625 Quinaby Road NE, a short distance north of Keizer. Or, they may choose to walk on their own, starting at the Gardens anytime between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. (10 km. walkers) or 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. (5 km. walkers).
