Silver Falls State Park walk
11 km. (6.8 miles) rated moderately easy, with a 1 km (.6 mile) extension rated easy. Possible 5 km. route rated easy.
The 11 km. route descends into the canyon of Silver Creek, then passes near nine spectacular waterfalls (and behind two of them). The walk through the canyon is somewhat rocky and damp in places and descends some big steps, so sturdy footwear and hiking sticks, if you are accustomed to them, are advised. Taking steps up to the rim again, the remainder of the walk is on paved paths through forested areas along the canyon rim. A one kilometer extension, rated easy, goes to a tenth waterfall. This walk has been rated one of the 10 best Volkswalks in the United States.
Those people wishing an easy 5 km. walk to see three waterfalls may improvise a route on paved paths through forested areas along the canyon rim. Check with our president, Sally Ross, 541-726-7169, for suggestions.
Carpools leave the Willamalane Adult Activity Center, 215 West C Street in Springfield, at 7 a.m. and return there about 4 p.m. Each rider pays the driver $5 to help cover car expenses. Following the walk, the carpoolers will probably choose a restaurant on the way home to have lunch together (or, the food concession at the park lodge may be open for the weekend). In either event, lunch arrangements are always optional for each rider/walker.
People traveling to Silver Falls on their own should plan to meet the carpoolers between 8:30 and 8:45 a.m. at the registration point, the Safeway Grocery Store at 301 Westfield Street in Silverton. The park is a beautiful 14 mile drive from there. Directions to the Safeway in Silverton, along with further details of this year round walk, can be found by clicking on the "Other Oregon Events" bar at the top left of this page, then "Year Round Events" and scrolling down to "Silverton - Silver Falls State Park".
