Description

5 km. (3.1 miles) or 10 km. (6.2 miles), rated easy.

Today's walk consists of two 5 km. loops, do one or both. Asphalt paths and park roads, and some bark trails, are followed to the various regions of this beautiful state park along the Willamette River. See the world's largest black cottonwood tree and visit the original site of the Methodist mission established here years before Oregon statehood. On your way home, you may want to take the auto ferry across the river.

Carpools will leave the Willamalane Adult Activity Center, 215 West C Street in Springfield, at 8 a.m. and return there about 3:30 p.m. Each rider pays the driver $5 to help cover car expenses. Following the walk, the carpoolers will probably stop at a restaurant in Salem to have lunch together; however, lunch arrangements are always optional for each rider/walker.

People traveling to the park on their own may enter the park free of charge (this is Free State Park Day). They should plan to meet the carpoolers at about 9:45 a.m. at the start point inside the park, which will have adequate Volkswalk signage. Or, they may wish to do the Volkswalk on their own, starting anytime between 9 a.m. and noon from the start point.

Directions to the park, and further details of this walk, can be found by clicking on the "Other Oregon Events" bar at the top left of this page and scrolling down to 6/3. Alternately, the same information on this and thousands of other Volkswalks and Volksbikes throughout the United States can be obtained by clicking on the "National Events" bar on this page, then "Events" and following the prompts. This webpage will also direct you to Volkswalks in Canada and 40 other countries.
