Oscar Swinney Memorial Walk, Coburg
Two 5 km. (3.1 mile) loops, both rated easy.
Today's walk commemorates the over-the-top commitment of Oscar Swinney to Volkssports, particularly to the Mossbacks Club. Oscar and his wife, Carmella, served for many years as our event coordinators, hauling and setting up all the items needed at our start, finish and checkpoint tables and our refreshment areas. They also Volkswalked almost all Oregon hosted events and many Year Rounds, volunteering as carpool drivers. Nationally, they walked in all 50 states and 51 capitals and attended many AVA national conventions. Oscar died this winter in his late 80's of respiratory complications. We all miss his friendship and enthusiasm. We chose Coburg for this walk because this is where he and Carmella did their first Volkswalk in May, 1998.
You may choose to walk one or both 5 km. loops. Both are on sidewalks, paved streets, and trails through historic Coburg's residential, business, and industrial areas. Several historic homes are on the routes.
Registration (and start point) for the walk is at the Coburg Community Grange, 32663 Mill Street in downtown Coburg. Register and start your walk anytime between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. (please finish by 4 p.m.).
