Silver Falls Year Round Walk
11 km. (6.8 miles) or 12 km. (7.4 miles), both rated moderately easy.
The walk begins in the picnic area of Silver Falls State Park, then descends into the canyon that Silver Creek runs through. On the descent, you walk behind the South Falls. After that, you continue on paved and dirt paths through the canyon past eight more waterfalls (and behind one of those). After ascending up to the main area again, you may choose an easy and short 1 km. walk to the North Falls, making a total of 10 waterfalls on the route. Or, you continue on a paved path through forest to return to the main lodge and picnic areas.
Although rated moderately easy, there are some steep steps down at one spot, some damp areas, and the final long ascent by stairway (about 100 steps). Sturdy hiking boots are advised. Be sure to carry water.
Carpools will leave the Willamalane Adult Activity Center, 215 West C Street in Springfield, at 7 a.m. and return there between 4 and 5 p.m. Each rider pays the driver $10 to help cover car expenses. Following the walk, the carpoolers will probably have lunch together in the picnic area: the park lodge has a concessionaire selling hearty lunches and beverages, or you may bring your own picnic lunch.
People traveling to Silver Falls State Park on their own should plan to meet the carpoolers at about 8:30 a.m. at the registration point, the Safeway Store at 918 North First Street (just off Hwy. 214) in Silverton. From there, it is about a 12 mile drive to the park.
