Eugene Roses & History Year Round Walk
5 km. (3.1 miles) rated easy, or 10 km. (6.2 mies), rated moderately easy.
A beautiful walk along the Willamette River Greenway to the 7-acre Owen Rose Garden; from there to the Shelton-McMurphy (historic) House. The 10 km. route then ascends a long series of steps to the summit of Skinner Butte, with splendid views over Eugene, Springfield, and the Coburg Hills. Descending from the summit, a gravel path leads to the Campbell Senior Center. The return to the start point is on a wide paved path along the Willamette River, passing an innovative, newly-redone children's playground and by a replica of Eugene Skinner's cabin, the first dwelling in the area.
We will meet at 9 a.m. in the lobby of the Valley River Inn, 1000 Valley River Way in Eugene, to register and start the walk. We should be finished between 11:30 a.m. and noon. At that time, some of the walkers may decide to have lunch together at a restaurant in the Valley River area; this is purely optional, of course.
Directions to the Valley River Inn (from I-5), and further details of this walk, can be found by clicking on the "Other Oregon Events" bar at the top left of this page, then "Year Round Events" and scrolling down to "Eugene - Roses & History". Alternately, the same information on this and thousands of other Volkswalks and Volksbikes throughout the United States can be obtained by clicking on the "National Events" bar on this page, then "Events" and following the prompts. The National Events page also lists Volkswalks in Canada and 45 other countries.
