Description

6 km. (3.7 miles) rated easy, or 11 km. (6.8 miles) rated moderately easy.

Today's walk begins in Alton Baker Regional Park, continuing along the canoe canal and through the arboretum, around Cuthbert Amphitheater and the Science Factory to Autzen Stadium (University of Oregon football). Then it crosses the Willamette River on the Frohnmayer Footbridge to enter the university campus. From campus, the 11 km. walk goes through neighborhoods to begin a long but gradual climb to Hendricks Park and the Rhododendron Garden (dogs not allowed in the garden). Descending through a forested area, the walk returns to a different part of the university campus, then again crosses the Willamette River to return by a different route along the river to the start point. This is the route of the Mossbacks' first walk in 1987, and it is still our most popular year round walk. The 6 km. walk goes to the campus and back, skipping Hendricks Park and the rhodie garden.

We will register at 9 a.m. in the lobby of the Valley River Inn, 1000 Valley River Way in Eugene. We then drive about two miles to the start point in the park. The 11 km. walk will probably be finished by 12:30 p.m. At that time, some of the participants will probably choose to have lunch together at a restaurant in downtown Eugene or in the Valley River area; this is purely optional, of course.

For directions to the Valley River Inn (from I-5), and further details of this walk, click onto the "Other Oregon Events" bar at the top left of this page, then "Year Round Events" and scroll down to "Eugene - Willamette River/U of O/Rhododendron Garden". Alternately, the same information on this and thousands of other Volkswalks and Volksbikes throughout the United States can be obtained by clicking on the "National Events" bar on this page, then "Events" and following the prompts. The National Events page also has links to Volkswalks in Canada and 43 other countries.
