Salem Year Round Walk
6 km. (3.7 miles), 10 km. (6.2 miles), or 12 km. (7.4 miles), all rated easy.
The 6 km. walk goes through downtown and to the riverfront and carousel; it then goes partway on the pedestrian bridge to Polk County and returns to pass through the State Capitol.
The 10 km. walk extends to include parks, Willamette University, and historic houses.
The 12 km. walk extends to include more historic houses.
Carpools leave the Willamalane Adult Activity Center, 215 West C Street in Springfield, at 8 a.m. and return there about 2:30 p.m. Each rider pays the driver $5 to help cover car expenses. Following the walk, the riders will probably choose a restaurant in Salem or Albany to have lunch together; however, lunch arrangements are always optional for each rider/walker.
People traveling to Salem on their own should plan to meet the carpoolers at about 9:15 a.m. at the start point, the Salem Hospital, 890 Oak Street SE, Salem, Building A (ER, Admissions). Directions to the hospital, and further details of this walk, can be found by clicking on the "Other Oregon Events" bar at the top left of this page, then "Year Round Events" and scrolling down to "Salem - Capital - Waterways". Alternately, the same information on this and thousands of other Volkswalks and Volksbikes throughout the United States can be obtained by clicking on the "National Events" bar on this page, then "Events" and following the prompts. The National Events page also has links to Volkswalks in Canada and over 40 other countries.
