Eugene - Ridgeline Trail, Spencer Butte, and South Amazon Walk
6 km. (3.7 miles) rated easy, or 11 km. (6.8 miles) rated moderately easy,
The 6 km. trail is flat, following Amazon Creek on both sides between Martin Street and Fox Hollow Road. This is a mostly residential area, with a park at the Martin Street end. On a sunny day, the walk will be shaded on one side, sunny on the other.
The 11 km. trail is quite different; it enters the Ridgeline Trail System at the Martin Street Trailhead, climbing up to a level section of the Ridgeline Trail, then climbing again to reach the summit of Spencer Butte. Most of this route is in forest. A total of 1300 feet elevation gain rewards walkers with fantastic 360-degree views from the butte of the southern Willamette Valley, Eugene, and the Cascade foothills and mountains to the east; binoculars are beneficial. The trail to the summit has been greatly improved by the city and is very popular. Sturdy footwear is needed and walking sticks may be helpful on the steps down from the summit. Carry water. The return to the start point is by the same route.
Registration for the walk is from 8 a.m. to noon at Emerald Valley Assisted Living, 4550 West Amazon Drive in south Eugene. Restrooms, free refreshments and water are available there. The walk is free unless international Volkssport credit is desired (information in the registration area). We ask walkers to finish by 4 p.m.
