Salem - Open Streets Walk
5 km. (3.1 miles) or 10 km. (6.2 miles), both rated easy.
Salem is opening 3 km. of city streets to pedestrian/bicycle/stroller-only traffic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Willamette Wanderers Volkssport club is sponsoring a 5 and a 10 km. walk to include the Open Streets. The Volkswalk registration is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Salem Saturday Market at 865 Marion Street (corner of Marion and Summer Streets). Walkers can arrange the Open Streets portion of their Volkswalks to a time convenient for them.
The Open Streets event features three different entertainment venues on the 5 km. walk, and a fourth venue on the 10 km. walk. At the venues, food, entertainment, and free activities are available. For more information and to view the Open Streets route, Google "Open Streets Salem". The 5 km. walk continues through nearby residential neighborhoods, while the 10 km. walk explores an area with late 19th century homes.
Carpools leave the Willamalane Adult Activity Center, 215 West C Street in Springfield, at 9 a.m. and return there about 3:30 p.m. Each rider pays the driver $5 to help cover car expenses. The carpoolers may decide to eat food from the vendors at the Open Streets venues, or they may choose to eat together after the walk at a restaurant in Salem or Albany; always, lunch arrangements are optional for each rider/walker.
People traveling to Salem on their own should plan to meet the carpoolers at 10:00-10:15 a.m. at the registration point (see above). Or, they may choose to do the walk on their own, starting from the Saturday Market anytime from 10 a.m. to noon (for the 10 km.) or 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (for the 5 km.).
